Valiant is the Jamaican people’s artist. With his resounding melodic voice and relatable storytelling, the Jamaican-born singer’s music offers a vivid reflection of life in his community.

Toward the end of 2023, Valiant completed a run of U.S. performance dates, officially introducing his charismatic personality to international audiences and solidified “Dunce Cheque” as a massive smash record. “Mi put out a one minute clip and the people demanded the rest,” he says of his breakout single. “The song created a shift because it’s about embracing all experiences without shame.”

From working part-time as a garage operator, when Valiant lost his father when he was 15, to writing songs in his hometown of St. Andrew, Jamaica, he cites reggae and dancehall legends like Dennis Brown, Shabba Ranks, Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Beres Hammond, Bob Marley, and Gregory Isaacs as influences growing up.

The young talent didn’t know what direction to take after high school, but rather than yield to the usual parental pressures, he found the answer in music.

He often hung out at the iconic Big Yard Studio in Kingston’s Half Way Tree neighborhood, where he was introduced to Popcaan’s Unruly Camp, a musical clique known for its infectious lyrics and melodies, and in 2020 released several singles prior to a ballad.

After joining Unruly Camp, Valiant shifted his musical direction, delivering what soon became Jamaica’s defining sound, with songs like “St. Mary,” “North Carolina,” and “Barbiebones” (which hit over one million views on YouTube in under a year alone).

Continuing to rise, kicking off the year with a historic MOBO Award for Best Caribbean Act, Valiant promises to continue to capture the attention of fans worldwide as one of the most impactful voices of his Jamaican sound.

“My genuine music is a real vibe. Every song represents real-life issues and a real story,” he says. With my music, I’m trying to create a better way for people to enjoy themselves and just be free.”
