DJ George Thoms

Bio

George Thoms is a Canadian born musician, turned DJ/producer, whose start in the music industry was nothing short of unique. Raised in a deaf household and encouraged by musically gifted grandparents, Thoms received his first drum kit at the age of 12 and has yet to look back. Spending the early part of his career as the lead vocalist in the hardcore group, Gone Hollywood, while simultaneously managing the Drum Shop at Toronto music landmark, Steve’s Music Store, Thoms proved himself as a bonafide percussion expert, talented songwriter and brazen performer. Over the course of their 4 year run, Gone Hollywood toured and played hundreds of shows with bands such as Every Time I Die, The Bronx, All That Remains, The Holly Springs Disaster, Callahan, Straight Reads The line, Cancer Bats and many more while tenaciously taking the Canadian hardcore scene by storm. Upon Gone Hollywood’s disbandment in 2009, Thoms quickly shifted gears and acted on his love of Motown, Funk, Soul, Pop, House and hip-hop music. Inspired by the likes of DJ Jazzy Jeff and fellow Canadian, Skratch Bastid, Thoms took to the turntables and began to perform in a different capacity, as an open format DJ. After spending 5 years traveling across North American nearly a dozen times touring with metal bands Protest the Hero and Cancer Bats, Thoms finally settled in Toronto to further hone his DJing craft. Taking an invested interest in turntablism and taking lessons from scratch legend, DJ Grouch, Thoms became a sought-after open format talent, holding down residencies at local Clubs/Bars such as Lavelle, Track & Field, Spin, Baby Huey, King Taps, Belfast Love, Cold Tea, Spin and Bangarang. Playing with Renown acts such as Grandtheft, Smalltown DJ’s, Skratch Bastid, Black Tiger Sex Machine, LCD Soundsystem, Action Bronson, Mazurbate (Official DJ for Jeremy Scott), Dopey, Grouch, Hej Zeus, Shortkut, M-Rock, Nick Bike, Vilify, ACRO, Harley Davidson, Marianas Trench, Elijah Wood x Jamie Fine, Shawn Hook, Virginia To Vegas, Courage My Love and many many more. Outside of his current 3-5 night-a-week performance schedule, Thoms continues to explore his love and talent for songwriting and production. Working alongside engineer heavyweights Quinn Daniels (Japain, Death Cohen) and Matt Hall (Island Riot, MH, Doubles), Thoms has produced a bold body of remixes and original music with over 1,000,000 streams. Thoms’ Debut Album Not Equal was released Jan 10/17 which is an instrumental 8 song collection of work using moody synths and driving basslines to achieve a truly unique sound. When Thoms is not DJing in Toronto or on tour with Daniel Caesar or Marianas Trench he can be found cuddled on his couch with Wolfie his dog and his beloved partner Sarah.
